What is Stabilising Solution?

Commonly used on walls that are chalky, powdery, or unevenly porous, stabiliser solution is a type of primer that has been specifically designed to treat porous or chalky surfaces before applying paint.

How To Apply Stabilising Solution?

Before full application can begin, it is always recommended that you stir or shake the product well before initial use. Some useful application tips include:

  • Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe down the surface, allowing it to dry completely.
  • Some stabilising solutions may need to be diluted with water. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the right ratio. If it doesn’t need dilution, you can use it straight from the container.
  • Pour the stabilising solution into a clean bucket, giving it a good stir. Apply an even coat of solution to your surface by brush or roller, making sure you do not leave any dry patches, as this could affect the final paint finish.
  • Once you’ve applied the stabiliser, allow it to dry according to the instructions on the label.
  • Once the stabiliser has dried, the surface should be properly sealed and ready for painting. You can now apply your chosen emulsion or paint on top.

What Surfaces Can Stabilising Solution Be Applied to?

Stabiliser solution can be applied to a variety of surfaces that are porous, powdery, or prone to uneven paint absorption.

Common surfaces to apply stabilising solution to include:

  • New and old plaster
  • Concrete, brick, and rendered walls
  • Chalky or dusty walls
  • Cement, plasterboard, and dry lining
  • Exterior masonry
