Generally used for trim surfaces, black gloss paint can give your interior a real classy feel.
With it's higher sheen, it will naturally reflect more light than other lower sheen finishes. This can make interior woodwork look elegant in the colder winter months when synthetic light hits the finish.
The recent trend of painting radiators with more colourful paint colours, a black gloss finish has become increasing popular. At Decorating Centre Online, we have plenty of options when it comes to using black metal paint with a gloss finish.
Our favourite and most popular black gloss paint is a multi-surface paint called Zinsser Allcoat (which also comes in a matt or satin finish). We have also seen an increase in popularity for black gloss paint wood on exterior surfaces such as sheds and fences which the Zinsser Allcoat is also suitable for.
Another great option for this is the Johnstone's Trade Stormshield Flexible Gloss in Black. This exterior black gloss will give you up to 8 years of protection for metal and wood surfaces.
What Colour Undercoat Should I Use for Black Gloss Paint?
You can get undercoats mixed to any colour you desire which means you could get it as close to black as possible.
If you can find one in an undercoat in a dark grey colour then we would recommend using that otherwise get your chosen undercoat mixed into a dark grey colour. This will give you the best looking black gloss finish once you've completed your project.
Can You Paint Over Black Gloss?
Yes, but it will take some preparation. The exact method you need will depend on the new paint colour.
We'd always recommend cleaning the black gloss surface with sugar soap and a clean sponge to remove any dirt, grease and dust. Then sand the painted surface down lightly to increase the adhesion of the new paint and make sure it is clean, dry and free from any dirt.
Then prime the surface for a more long term durable finish, ideally in a colour close to the new topcoat. Once the surfaced has been suitably primed, paint over it in your chosen paint which is suitable for the surface.
