What are VOCs?

Great question! VOCs is short for "Volatile Organic Compounds".

You know that ‘new paint smell’? Yeah, that’s VOCs, the chemical that they give off can basically be very harmful to the environment and people causing irritation to your airways, headaches and even nausea.

Whilst water based paints don’t contain many VOCs, solvent based paints tend to contain more, making water based paints a better option when it comes to painting your home. 

At the end of the day, deciding what paint to use comes down to personal preference and your needs! As we mentioned all of our emulsions and most of our specialist paints are water based low VOC so you have a huge selection to choose from! 

What classes a paint as low VOC?

So what does low-VOC paint mean? Low-VOC paints have a reduced amount of volatile organic compounds. Therefore, the paint won't give off as much of that harmful gas as a traditional paint.

According to current regulation, the number generally accepted for a low–VOC paint is less than 50 grams per litre and for zero-VOC paint is less than 5 grams per litre.

Leyland Trade Vinyl Matt

Johnstone's Trade Covaplus Vinyl Matt

Similarly to the Leyland Vinyl Matt, the Johnstone's Covaplus is at just 3g per litre VOC. Ideal for using when painting living rooms and dining areas, this vinyl matt paint offers excellent opacity and a high level of coverage. 

Other popular picks include the Tikkurila anti reflex paint. This popular trade paint has been designed to eliminates flashing and deliver a perfect flawless finish. Anti reflex white 2 is available in a range of sizes and is ultra low VOC, leaving almost no odour behind after painting.

Does using a low VOC paint mean i have to sacrifice on the colour I want?

Absolutely not! As you will see the majority of all of low VOC paints have the ability to be colour matched to the designer paint colour of your choice. Simply just enter the name of the colour and designer you would like us to colour match and leave it to us to work our magic.
